Unichar

Unichar is my new project, a hot-or-not style ranking system for Unicode characters.

As votes are made, an aesthetic begins to form, as you can see by looking at the Top 10 as it is today:

1. (MALAYALAM LETTER VOCALIC LL)
2. ɷ (LATIN SMALL LETTER CLOSED OMEGA)
3. (DEVANAGARI LETTER LLA)
4. (YI SYLLABLE HXAT)
5. (TELUGU LETTER AA)
6. (ORIYA LETTER VOCALIC R)
7. (KANNADA LETTER TA)
8. (MALAYALAM LETTER JA)
9. (SINHALA LETTER ALPAPRAANA TTAYANNA)
10. (DEVANAGARI ACUTE ACCENT)

These are all forms defined by their curves — with one exception, #10. #10 is just the accent, but perhaps people are reading the dotted circle as part of the letter, instead of as a placeholder. I’m curious if the attraction to curved forms will continue as the project lives on, or why it is that we’re drawn to these shapes.
